XML sitemap analyzer
Fetch one sitemap document and report its size, hosts, path depths, missing lastmod dates, and duplicate locations.
This one uses a server lookup because the job cannot finish on the device alone.
How to use it
- 1Paste the sitemap URL. On a WordPress site that is often /sitemap.xml or /wp-sitemap.xml.
- 2Choose Analyze. Kiln fetches only the address you submit.
- 3Read the counts. Download the CSV for the location table.
- 4If the file is a sitemap index, the child sitemap addresses are listed and not opened.
When it helps
- See how a sitemap is split across host names and path depths.
- Find URLs that are listed twice or have no lastmod date.
- Check the size of one sitemap file before submitting it.
Good to know
- Child sitemaps are listed and not fetched. A sitemap index is not a full crawl of the site.
- The page URLs inside a sitemap are not requested.
- A document larger than 2 MB, or one with more than 10,000 locations, is rejected instead of partly analyzed.
- XML document types and custom entities are rejected so the parser cannot be used to expand them.
Questions
Why were the other sitemap files not checked?
An index can point at many files. Kiln analyzes the one document you submitted and tells you which child addresses it listed.
Does this visit every URL in the file?
No. The locations are read from the XML. Kiln does not request those pages.
