Image compressor
Choose a quality, preview the compressed image, and see whether the file got smaller. A larger result is labeled as larger.
It runs in your browser. What you enter stays on this device.
Drop a PNG, JPEG, WebP, GIF, or AVIF here, or choose a file. The limit is 12 MB.
The image stays in this browser. Orientation is applied when the browser provides it. Location and other metadata are not copied into the new file.
How to use it
- 1Drop an image onto the page, or choose a file.
- 2Move the quality control. JPEG, WebP, and AVIF use that quality.
- 3Read the original size, the new size, and the percentage.
- 4Download the file when the size is what you want.
When it helps
- Shrink a photo before sending it.
- Compare two quality settings on the same image.
- See when a new file is larger than the original.
Good to know
- A result that is larger is shown as larger. Kiln does not call that a reduction.
- PNG compression here is lossless, so the quality control does not shrink a PNG.
- Files need to be 12 MB or smaller, and the decoded image needs to stay under 12 million pixels.
- Metadata other than orientation is not copied. GIF files keep the first frame.
Questions
Is the image uploaded?
No. Compression happens in this browser. The file is not sent to a server or included in analytics.
Why did the file get larger?
Re-encoding can add bytes, especially for a small or already-compressed image. Keep the original when the new file is larger.
