DNS lookup
Look up one kind of public DNS record for a domain. A missing record is a result, not a broken page.
This one uses a server lookup because the job cannot finish on the device alone.
How to use it
- 1Enter a domain name, such as example.com.
- 2Choose the record type.
- 3Choose Look up.
- 4Copy the result. Kiln does not open a connection to the domain.
When it helps
- See where a domain’s A or AAAA record points.
- Read the TXT records published at a name.
- Check the listed name servers before changing a domain.
Good to know
- The lookup uses a public resolver. It cannot see records that exist only on a private network.
- Kiln does not connect to the addresses it finds.
- One request checks one name and one record type.
- An answer can be cached for a short time, and never longer than five minutes.
Questions
Is the domain name stored?
The name is sent so the lookup can run. It is not saved as content you submitted, and it is not included in analytics.
What does a missing record mean?
The public resolver had no record of that type. The domain can still exist and publish other record types.
